How it Works
-
Mixed age classrooms where children have an opportunity to learn from as well as teach their classmates
-
Student choice of activity from within a prescribed range of options
-
Uninterrupted (calm and orderly) blocks of work time
-
A constructivist or "discovery" model, where students learn concepts primarily by working with materials, rather than through constant, direct instruction
-
Specialized educational materials developed by Maria Montessori and her collaborators
-
Freedom of movement within the classroom
-
A trained Montessori teacher
-
Indivual or small group lessons aimed to meet children at their developmental level
-
Three year groupings allow children to develop a bond with their instructor. Furthermore, as they master various skills and lessons in the classroom, they pass them onto younger students, reinforcing leadership skills, the lessons they've just learned, and self esteem.

Montessori Origins
Montessori is an innovative, child-centered approach to education, developed by Maria Montessori in 1907. The goal of Montessori education is to foster a child’s natural inclination to learn. Montessori teachers guide rather than instruct, linking each student with activities that meet thier interests, needs, and developmental level. The classroom is designed to allow movement and collaboration, as it also promotes concentration and a sense of order.
